Course Description

Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Literature at AEU has been designed to acquaint students with comprehensive systematic Chinese language knowledge, master skilled Chinese communicative competence, and promote aestheticism to Chinese culture. This is a four-year undergraduate program, covering eight semesters. In Foundation Year or first year, students are required to go through general Chinese language programs to acquire advanced level language proficiency, and some other basic skills such as social studies, office application and public administration that are necessary for their work. In the second and third year, students are supposed to learn some basic language courses, such as comprehensive Chinese, listening, speaking, reading and writing courses. This gives students opportunities to acquire basic Chinese language knowledge and competence through learning Chinese culture, Chinese history, Chinese literature, and so on. In addition, in the fourth-year students are required to focus on teaching methodology, teaching psychology, and teaching Chinese as a second language, prior to their teaching practicum.

Course AimsBachelor of Arts in Chinese Literature is designed to aim​ at achieving the following objectives:

  1. To acquaint students ranging from basic to advanced knowledge of Chinese language and certain professional theory
  2. To provide students with and basic Chinese humanities knowledge
  3. To prepare students to be familiar with Chinese national conditions and cultural context
  4. To enable students to use Chinese language

To adapt to the demand of modern international society

Program duration and specifications The Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Literature is a full-time, four-year program. One academic year is divided into two semesters, each of which lasts fifteen weeks and is counted as 3 or 4.5 semesterly credits. For a 3-credit semester lasts 45-hour instruction, while a 4.5-credit one lasts 67.5-hour instruction. Assessments will be made at the end of each semester. Students who complete successfully their study for one semester earn 3 credits.

In year 4, there is an internship (teaching practicum) and compile the report of the internship as a​ teaching practicum portfolio which weighs 6 credits (60 hours, approximately 1 month) to be completed as follows:

  1. Take an actual teaching test as a teacher trainee for two sessions, one week each, equal to 3 hours + two writing of his or her own reports on the actual teaching tests.
  2. Observe peer teacher trainees who are doing their actual teaching test for 28 classes equal to 42 hours, with a writing of an observation record for each class.
  3. Finalize the compilation of his or her reports which are the actual teaching tests + observation records with any other relevant materials and/or facilities in a portfolio within a week, equal to fifteen hours and submit this final work to the internship committee for final assessment. 
  4. Complete the compilation of your report, which includes practical teaching tests, observation records, other relevant materials and/or equipment, and teaching practicum portfolio within one week which is equal to fifteen hours, and submit this final assignment to the practicum committee for final evaluation.

    Therefore

  5. Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Literature requires student to successfully complete a total of 126 credits which is divided into 8 semesters, 120 weeks on classroom instructions, 5 weeks internship equal to 1860 hours.
  6. The full academic program is taught in Chinese.
